Changes for Be Well means more choices for Airmen Published Sept. 6, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Joshua Edwards 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Be Well program now offers more choices and increased flexibility, due to a revamp that went into effect July 1. The Be Well is an Air Force-wide program designed to provide Airmen and leadership with resources to optimize fitness and health. "The Be Well program is primarily given for those who failed to meet the Air Force physical training standards," said Garry Capers, Health and Wellness Center exercise physiologist. "This helps educate them on proper training techniques and nutrition to get them healthier and help them meet the fitness standards. This class is open to anyone who wants to attend not just those that don't meet PT standards." The new program offers access to a full suite of options, including a comprehensive online class, telephonic health coaching through Military One Source, in-person classes on weight management with a fitness component, and instructor-led workshops on cardiovascular and strength training. "The HAWC will offer blocks for those who fail the muscle strengthening portions, such as push-ups and sit-ups, and a block for cardiovascular training" said Capers. "There is also a phone-line members can call to talk to an exercise physiologist one-on-one to discuss their unique situation, it's more of a support mechanism." Even though the Be Well program provides the tools, Capers said he believes the individual's supervisor should help in the process. "What any service member needs is direct supervisory intervention to help them," he said. "They need to ensure they are motivated to meet those standards while training. To meet those standards they need to be training at least three times a week." For more information about the Be Well program call the HAWC at 325-654-5692.
