New commander for ASU ROTC

Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 at Angelo State University welcomed Lt. Col. Pedro Matos as their new commander in July.

Matos came to the detachment from U.S. Southern Command where he served as the executive officer to the military deputy commander.

As the new commander, his responsibilities and mission includes recruiting, training, motivating and educating AF officer candidates.

Matos says he aims be to very visible and accessible to the cadets.

"My intention as an AFROTC detachment commander is to always lead by example and lead from the front, communicate effectively with the unit and empower the cadets and the cadre to lead," said Matos. "I'll strive to lead this unit with transparency and will work hard to keep every member in our detachment informed."

Matos also plans to strengthen the relationships the ROTC developed has developed.

"I want to maintain the outstanding relations with Goodfellow Air Force Base and the San Angelo community and support them as well," Matos noted.

Matos is also serving in other roles at ASU, he works as a professor at the school and is chairman of the Department of Aerospace Studies.

Matos hopes the students will leave ASU after their four year training in the officer course ready to lead.

"I want the cadets to leave Det. 847 with an expeditionary mindset ready to lead in our Air Force," he said. "I want for the new lieutenants to be culturally savvy, motivated and ready to react to uncertainties."

Matos will remain in his position as commander of Det. 847 for the next two years.
