All Hazards Preparedness Summit meeting for region 15 Published April 13, 2015 By Senior Airman Scott Jackson 17th Training Wing Public Affairs SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The National Weather Service based in San Angelo hosted a summit meeting, bringing safety and weather specialists from region 15, a group of 18 different counties April 9. The event aimed at developing ways to better communications before and during natural disasters. Members from various agencies, including local weathermen, provided input to improve or develop a better system. "Sharing information with our community on how to keep everyone safe is the point of this," said Hector R. Guerrero, National Weather Service. "What we're trying to do is come out with new ideas that we can share with the community. How to receive a warning, how to communicate that warning to a group of people, and then of course planning, pre-planning, and as well on how to enact these plans." The discussions centered on past events where operations should have gone smoother and what they should do to never repeat mistakes. Some said that emergency plans need to be well thought out far in advance before any event or season. For Goodfellow, these plans become very relevant when considering that member's children go to schools in the surrounding area and members themselves live in San Angelo. While Goodfellow does not receive sever weather warnings from San Angelo, it is still important for base personnel's awareness on how they handle emergencies. "The all hazards preparedness summit was important to Goodfellow personnel as it focused on how severe weather information gets out to residents, including military and DoD civilian families, of San Angelo in a timely manner to allow residents to take action and react to it before it arrives," said Samuel L. Spooner III, 17th Training Wing Chief of Safety.
