The Navy Center for Information Dominance Detachment hosted a two-week Drug Education for Youth day camp Aug. 4 to 13 to DEFY is a promote substance abuse prevention to youths 9 to 12 years old.

DEFY youths take part in classroom education that encompasses goal setting, leadership and teamwork, relationships and conflict management, substance abuse prevention, gang awareness and de-glamorization, and self-esteem during a five-day residential camp.

Navy Petty Officer Andrea N. Mangone, DEFY operations coordinator, said she liked seeing the children learn and grow.

“Those moments when you know you are helping one of these kids is unbelievable,” said Mangone. “Our group this year is full of amazing kids, and I can’t wait to see what they can accomplish over the next year.”

Another member of the staff enjoyed watching the children show maturity.

“The best parts of the DEFY program are the moments during lessons when the children express a deep understanding beyond their years,” said Petty Officer Evan Chauvette, DEFY logistics coordinator. “Between snacks, games and laughter, the glimpses of future maturity make it all worth it.”

The coordinators lined up several events for the kids to go to, including trips to the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy, the Abilene Zoo and many more.

“I love the field trips,” said one youth. “They’re very fun, and you learn a lot from them too.”

The youth also expressed interest in coming back as a participant or volunteering as a junior staff member.

The program will continue through the school year by having the mentors meet up with the children on a monthly basis to catch up with them and help them with any problems they may have.
