GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Force Support Squadron and the 312th Training Squadron hosted the Annual Blood, Sweat and Stairs Competition to commemorate 9/11 at the 312th training pad on Goodfellow Air Force Base, Sept. 12.
“The Blood, Sweat and Stairs is supposed to memorialize the firefighters and responders that responded to the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001,” said Staff Sgt. Robert O. Lysholm, 312th Training Squadron instructor, “It’s supposed to be a tribute to them for all the stairs that they had climbed trying to save all those individuals. We try to tribute this to them by having this large obstacle course and getting a taste of what they encountered.”
The competition included body squats, pushups, a hose pull, a tire flip, a tire run, using a sledgehammer and ascending and descending hundreds of stairs. Each obstacle was monitored by an individual who instructed participants on what they’d have to do to move on to the next obstacle.
“I think the fire school did an outstanding job putting up a safe event for all personnel at Goodfellow Air Force Base and brought this event not only to the people in our fire school but anybody on the base,” said Samuel L. Spooner, 17th Training Wing Safety chief.
The competition encompassed the entire base and all the students, including the San Angelo Police Department, the San Angelo SWAT team and multiple civilians.
“Hopefully this event can bring some comradery from different downtown agencies to the base,” said Lysholm.
The competition had a total of 62 participants, of which only three males and three females could win first, second or third place.
