This year’s influenza vaccination season kicked off on Oct. 6, 2015. Col. Michael L. Downs, 17th Training Wing Commander, group commanders, joint service and other wing leadership have received their flu vaccination. The regular flu season starts this month and runs until June 2016.

“We are working on a schedule now for all active duty and Department of Defense beneficiaries,” said Lt. Col. Paul Miller Jr., 17th Medical Operations Squadron commander. “Our goal is to have the majority of active duty vaccinated by mid-November.”

Vaccinations are mandatory for active duty, reserve and guard personnel. The seasonal flu vaccine is offered to all training squadrons and active duty, permanent party personnel, initially. Additionally, the Medical Group will mail out information letters to high-risk population members.

Flu shots will be available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the base clinic once flu vaccine is on hand. However, the Medical Group closes on holidays and the third Thursday each month for training.

“Immunization is the best primary prevention for influenza,” said Miller. “Secondary prevention measures include washing your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. Minimize touching your eyes, nose or mouth, avoid close contact with sick people through social distancing and do not report to work if you are sick.”
