GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program hosted the first Silent Glow Walk for Goodfellow to raise awareness about the SAPR program and show support for survivors of sexual assault on Oct. 28.
“I have known people who have been assaulted, so having this awareness and getting the message out there is really good,” said Airman Brianna M. McPherson, 316th Training Squadron student.
The walk brought people from all over the base to show their support. The event had a turnout of around 142 people which included students, civilians, permanent party and children.
Opening remarks were made by Col. Terry J. Hamrick Jr., 17th Training Wing Vice Commander, Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne S. Bass, 17th Training Wing Command Chief and Donna L. Casey, 17th Training Wing Sexual Assault Response Coordinator. Participants could receive free T-shirts and glow sticks from SAPR representatives during the event.
“It is a good time for all of us to reflect on the role that we play in this,” said Hamrick. “It is up to all of us to eliminate sexual assault.”
Participants started the walk around the Goodfellow Air Force Base troop walk. Bags and blue balloons lined the troop walk symbolizing the victims of sexual assault. Inside the bags were electric candles. The bags were also decorated on the outside with inspirational words and drawings.
After participants walked the one mile trail, they finished in front of the 315th Training Squadron.
The next SAPR event is Guys Night Out at the Doolittle Room in the Event Center on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
