Col. Michael L. Downs, 17th Training Wing Commander, hosted an Honorary Commanders Luncheon at the Event Center Nov. 5.

The Honorary Commanders Program promotes public awareness of the Air Force's mission, policies and programs. Honorary commanders are selected based on their level of community involvement and their reach in the community.

“Goodfellow is a wonderful part of our city,” said Dwain Morrison, San Angelo mayor. “San Angelo is a military town and has been since its inception in 1867 with Fort Concho. Our comradery is always good.”

The program also pairs military leaders with their civilian counterparts to build community relationships.

“There is really no fence between Goodfellow and San Angelo, we are just one community,” said Downs. “We love being a part of San Angelo.”

Downs gave a presentation of the 17th Training Wing’s mission as well as specific community events such as Operation Kids Investigating Deployment Services and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program’s Color Run.

“I have learned a whole lot about the mission of this base and it’s impressive,” said Morrison.

Goodfellow strives to promote healthy and long-lasting community involvement initiatives such as volunteer opportunities, partnership programs and more.

“During the Unit Effectiveness Inspection one thing our Airmen felt great about was the way the community takes care of them,” said Downs. “And that is incredible.”
