GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The base housing office opened the Avenger’s Lounge at building 246 Dec. 18, to offer permanent party members a place to hang out.
A process spanning several months, the housing office worked closely with the command chief and junior enlisted Airmen to ensure the lounge met the requests of permanent party.
“The Avenger Lounge was created to give our permanent party members a place to relax and call their own,” said Victor DeLaRosa, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron dormitory management chief. “They'll have access to the lounge 24/7.”
The name Avenger comes from a B-25 aircraft flown during the Doolittle Raid, a historic World War II raid. Senior Airman Laurel Richards, 17th Training Wing Public Affairs broadcast journalist, painted a mural of the Avenger plane in the main room.
“The name was chosen by dorm Airmen, our dorm managers gave us all a few choices, all of them were airplanes from the Doolittle Raid,” said Richards. “The Avenger is specifically the 13th plane to take off from the carrier, and after completing their mission the crew ended up bailing over China and all crewmembers survived the war.”
Converted over several months, the building now contains a main room with a billiards table, a Ping-Pong table and a couch.
Other rooms include a theater room, a gaming room and a kitchenette with refrigerator.
