Goodfellow hosts Martin Luther King Jr. march Published Jan. 19, 2016 By Senior Airman Scott Jackson 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- For the second year, the Goodfellow Martin Luther King Jr. committee hosted a march on base Jan. 15.Every year since 1980, the U.S. government has recognized the third Monday in January as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in honor of his impact on the civil rights movement.“Doing things like this is worth it,” said 1st Lt. Sonya R. Yelbert, 17th Medical Support Squadron readiness and support commander, and head of the MLK committee. “Look around. Blacks and whites are sitting and talking together. This wouldn’t be able to happen without him.”The march began at the Norma Brown building and ended at the Taylor Chapel, where a reception took place. At the reception, Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Ray P. Thompson, 17th Training Wing chaplain, gave a speech of what life was like during the civil rights movement.Native to Mississippi, Thompson spoke of personally meeting Martin Luther King Jr. and touched on how important King’s dream is, even after 60 years of his death.“King said, ‘I belong to no race but the human race,’” said Thompson. “We need to hear this now just like we needed to hear it in the 1960s.”
