Charles Yi 17th Training Wing Legal Office GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Free tax assistance and electronic filing will be available for active duty service members E-5 and below assigned to Goodfellow through their Unit Tax Advisor beginning mid-February. Retirees making less than $62,000 adjusted gross income, and service members grades E-5 and below without a UTA should utilize the base Tax Center located in the Legal Office in the Norma Brown Building or Building 430, Suite 202. This service is also available for local recruiters E-5 and below and family members of deployed Guard or Reserve with power of attorney. This service is by appointment only. To Do-It-Yourself Free files are available to taxpayers who have a 2015 Adjusted Gross Income of $62,000, or less, through the IRS website at http://www.irs.gov/uac/Free-File:-Do-Your-Federal-Taxes-for-Free. To be eligible for the Military OneSource service, members must fall under one of the following categories: Active Duty, Guard or Reserve regardless of activation status and spouse and dependent children authorized in DEERS. Please check the website’s Q & A section for further eligibility options at http://www.militaryonesource.mil/. Bring the Following Documents (if applicable): - Military I.D. - All W-2 Forms. - HUD-1 Forms. - Proof of Child Care expenses. - All 1099 INT and DIV Forms. - Power of Attorney if necessary. - Form 1098, mortgage interest statement. - Any other tax-related documents that individuals may have. - Receipt for Deductible Expenses if itemizing deductions. - Social Security cards of members, their spouse and dependents. - Proof of bank account, such as a void check or deposit slip, if direct deposit is requested. - First year Airmen need to know if a parent is claiming them as a dependent. - Last year’s tax return, if available. The UTAs are limited to individual income tax assistance and are unable to provide advice or assistance to anyone owning a private business. Additionally, the UTAs reserve the right to refer complicated returns to a certified public accountant or a qualified tax preparation agency.
