Base members celebrated the 50th Super Bowl with a pre-game celebration at the Commissary Feb. 6, and a Super Bowl party at the Event Center, Feb. 7.

The Angelo State University football team visited the base as part of the pre-game celebration where the athletes participated in a variety of party games, such as hula-hoop, musical chairs and more.

The base Commissary also provided free hot dogs, barbeque-ribs, sushi, chips and soda, said Josie Anderson, Commissary event coordinator.

On game day, permanent party and students came together to take part in the celebration hosted by the 17th Force Support Squadron.

“The Super Bowl is an American tradition,” said Shandy L. Scott, FSS event coordinator. “This is an annual event that boosts morale. With FSS we have a big activity every month that’s designed to give students something to have fun and to relieve stress.”

Stress can be a major issue for military students. And for many students, the extended curfew on game day was enough to boost morale.

“I’m here to see the Panthers win,” said U.S. Army Pvt. Richard A. Rufin, 344th Military Intelligence Battalion student. “Things like this bring us together, and everyone has a good time.”

Watching the big game wasn’t enough for some people.

“We make bets on plays, and instead of drinking, whoever loses does 10 push-ups,” said U.S. Army Pfc. Nicholas W. Winchester, 344th MI BN student.

Even though this year’s Super Bowl is over, members can enjoy video games, musical instruments and other special events provided by the Event Center.
