The 17th Force Support Squadron hosted the Polar Bear Party, 5K Run and Plunge at the Goodfellow Air Force Base Recreation Camp, Feb. 20.

“I saw a lot of excitement. This is always a lot of fun,” said Shandy Scott, 17th FSS event coordinator. “The best part of today, there has been a lot of families out today.”

The event started with a 5K run, of which participants wore t-shirts decorated with Polar Bear Party logos. As the runners participated in the 5K, other activities opened up. Some of the extra activities during the event included ice skating, rock climbing and polar bear themed arts and crafts.

“It was my sons first 5K, his first rock climbing experience and his first Polar Bear Plunge.” Col. Michael Grunwald Jr., 17th Training Group Commander. “He got to do it all here at Goodfellow.”

After lunch, the Polar Bear Plunge began with Col. Michael L. Downs, 17th Training Wing Commander, dumping ice into the lake. Participants in various costumes such as Batman and Thing One and Thing Two jumped into the water as part of the Polar Bear Plunge costume contest.

After the festivities, Downs handed out awards to the participants of the 5K, costume contest, and the Spirit Award was given to the unit with the most involvement in the event.

“One of the reasons FSS is here is to build morale and that is what events like this are designed to do,” said Scott.
