GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Goodfellow is implementing a new base wide recycling policy starting March 1.
“The change is driven by an Air Force policy to conduct recycling to only what is required by law and what is beneficial to the Air Force and the environment,” said 1st Lt. Alexander Wright, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron operations deputy flight chief.
The new Integrated Solid Waste Management Contract will make changes to the following:
• Recycle Center will not recycle glass and plastic.
• Metal recycling is still available at the base Recycle Center.
• The number of gray recycling bins will be increased from 100 to 200.
• Gray bins are for paper only.
• 100% of paper in gray bins will be shredded by the contractor.
• Small office blue bins will no longer be emptied by the contactor.
“This contract will affect how easy it is to recycle paper because there won’t be individual paper recycling boxes,” said Wright. There will be one or two gray paper bins per building. “The blue bins that we have been using to collect plastics and cans will not be picked up by the contractor anymore.”
“What we are doing now is coming up with different ideas of how to continue to recycle…” said Wright.
