GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office hosted a double elimination dodgeball tournament between 14 teams at the Mathis Fitness Center March 26.
The SAPR office used the tournament to provide a fun event for base members, and a platform to spread awareness for sexual assault.
“The purpose was to bring awareness to the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program,” said Franklin D. Sides, 17th Training Wing SAPR office victim advocate.
Teams battled it out for first place, but only one could win. Team Synergy was among the teams that were eliminated.
“We unfortunately lost, but it was a blast,” said Airman 1st Class Eric C. Hayes, 315th Training Squadron student and team Synergy member. “It's a good way to spread awareness and to have some fun on base. It definitely boosts morale.”
In between rounds, SAPR victim advocates provided sexual assault statistics, sexual assault fact cards and handed out T-shirts.
The SAPR program offers support services for victims of sexual assault. It provides direct interpersonal support, crisis intervention and informed decisions regarding restricted and unrestricted reporting.
“We’re open 24/7 via the hotline or the office,” said Sides. “There are volunteer victim advocates for each squadron. You can talk to a chaplain, medical personnel or anyone you feel comfortable talking to.”
The SAPR office plans to hold its 6th annual Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Challenge at the Taylor Chapel, April 30. Teams will test communication skills and strategy while racing against the clock.
