San Angelo community and civic leaders toured the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy and learned the 17th Training Wing’s mission April 14.

The tour was part of a monthly event hosted by Leadership San Angelo, a group made up of 34 active and upcoming community leaders.

“It’s great that they do this and that we can host it for them,” said Col. Kurt A. Wendt, 17th Training Group Deputy Commander. “A lot of them know about Goodfellow in name, but have never been here and seen what we do firsthand.”

Leadership San Angelo spends an entire day each month touring specific facilities to broaden their leadership skills and learn more about the local community.

“Our point is to mentor and network,” said Sandra Pomroy, San Angelo Chamber of Commerce member. “We begin viewing applicants in August.”

“Leadership San Angelo is a program of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce,” said Pomroy. “It was created 33 years ago, this is the 33rd class.”

Leadership San Angelo functions as a 9-month-long curriculum mentor and shape future and present leaders.

“Every month is centered on something different in our community,” said Pomroy. “Health care would be one day and then we would have city and county government; recreation and arts; agriculture, which is an industry of the economy; education and lastly a chamber day.”

Chamber day is a special course for the group where they pick an important topic to discuss.

“Like today, to cover our mission at the chamber, we want to make sure we have a great community for our citizens’ to live in,” said Pomroy. “Also, we need to show what our economic drivers in our community are. Tourism is also on our checklist since it helps our economy in huge ways. And since Goodfellow is a huge driver for both, we toured it!”
