Angelo State University Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 cadets participated in their annual field training exercise at Camp Sentinel April 22 and 23.

This FTX is an incentive tool for cadets to pursue an Air Force commission and teaches crucial skills needed to become effective future Air Force leaders.

“We are doing this because the ROTC detachment is looking for opportunities to train the future leaders of the United States Air Force,” said Master Sgt. Justin A. Bell, 316th Training Squadron electronic warfare training deputy flight chief.

During the first half of day one, the cadets learned a variety of skills to include Self-Aid and Buddy Care, weapon familiarization and leading group movements, which they were tested on in combat conditions.

“I’m going to be a fire team leader so I’m looking to get more experience leading people,” said Ashley M. Wellman, ASU Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 cadet.

Through Friday night and late Saturday morning, Goodfellow Army and Air Force instructors ran the cadets through a series of operations and exercises leading to a final scenario that tested a variety of their knowledge.

“What I look forward to the most is the opportunity to teach, lead and mentor,” said Bell. “Seeing the cadets perform well under any kind of stress position is nice.”

The FTX concluded around noon Saturday, leaving the cadets with newfound knowledge of combat skills and leadership experience.
