Col. Powell receives honorary induction to chief master sergeant Published April 28, 2016 By Senior Airman Scott Jackson 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- U.S. Air Force Col. Charles E. Powell, retired, received an induction to the rank of chief master sergeant, an honorary award bestowed by the highest ranking enlisted on base, April 27. The induction surprised Powell. No one let him know beforehand that it would take place. “This wasn’t in the script,” said Powell laughing on stage immediately after receiving the induction. “At least in the script I got, it wasn’t there.” Powell’s, previous position as 27th commander of Goodfellow Air Force Base, and constant charity such as his grant offer, which awards Goodfellow members $500 to further their education, is part of why he was selected as an honorary chief. The chiefs council felt his history with the base and his actions deserved the induction, one of the highest honors chiefs can bestow on an individual. “We really love everything you do, Col. Powell,” said Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne S. Bass, 17th Training Wing Command Chief. “Well, now I can say Chief Powell, and that feels nice.”
