Goodfellow Air Force Base volunteers assisted with the Showdown in San Angelo Super Nationals Drag Boat Race at Lake Nasworthy June 24-26.

The event stars hydro drag race boats that are capable of reaching up to 250 mph in a liquid quarter-mile race. The Showdown brings in people from around the nation and the vounteers ensure that the lake was kept clean.

“We had over 80 volunteers helping in a variety of ways,” said Peggy Arnold, San Angelo Chamber of Commerce acting vice president. “They were absolutly awesome. The race couldn’t have happened without the volunteers.”

Goodfellow members directed traffic, managed waste and helped racers get their boats in and out of the water.

“I clean up the pits and help the drivers,” said Airman 1st Class Stron Richiardson, 315th TRS student. “I think [the race is] awesome. It's the first time I've been out here or to any type of boat race. I've been to drag racing before, its similar, but this is a whole new experience.”

The volunteers’ support continued the partnership between the base and the San Angelo community.
