The Best in the Southwest dining out Published May 7, 2015 By Tech. Sgt. Austin Knox 17th Training Wing Public Affairs SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Air Force ROTC Detachment 847, Angelo State University, held its 45th Annual Cadet Wing Dining Out Awards Banquet at the LeGrande Alumni Center May 1. Col. Kimberlee P. Joos, 17th Training Wing Commander, was the banquet's honored guest speaker. "Det 847 is nothing short of amazing," said Joos, in response to the multiple accolades earned as a unit and by individual members. "Excellence is not just an expectation; it is a way of life for you in this cadet corps. "Excellence is intrepid," she also said. "It is not stagnant. The thing about excellence is that once you think you've attained it, and you think you can stop striving for it; you have just let it go." She went on to encourage cadets to think about their upcoming leadership endeavors by asking, "So what are you going to do to raise the bar, cadets of Detachment 847?" The evening continued with various presenters handing out several awards, lending credence to the detachment's adopted slogan: "Best in the Southwest". "There's a reason we're the best in the Southwest year after year, and it's an honor to be a part of that reason," said Cadet Corrie Shafer, Spring 2015 Awards Officer. In addition to providing recognition, the banquet also serves as an occasion for the cadets to meet socially at a formal military function. "The best thing about Detachment 847 is the people," said Cadet Joshua Ury, Spring 2015 Cadet Wing Commander. "The cadets are always willing to go out of their way to make anything and everything possible. The cadre members go above and beyond to help anybody that wants to succeed in the program." The dining out tradition has historically served the Air Force as an opportunity for military members of all ranks to meet in an atmosphere of fellowship to promote esprit de corps.
