The 17th Security Forces Squadron’s military working dog section provided demonstrations to San Angelo youths at the YMCA and Rio Vista Head Start Aug. 5 and 6.

The demonstrations supported San Angelo and Goodfellow friendship.

“We think it’s a wonderful impact,” said Officer Rodrigo Hernandez, San Angelo Police Department Drug Resistance Education and Mentoring Program. “It certainly strengthens the relationship between Goodfellow personnel and their civilian counterparts.”

Staff Sgt. Tyler Wiseman, 17th SFS MWD kennel master, used this opportunity for public awareness and to illustrate what the MWDs are capable of.

“We wanted to show the dogs psychological deterrent capabilities and what we could perform,” said Wiseman.

Wiseman and his team showed how the dogs react to situations where a suspect is compliant and situations where the suspect is confrontational.

When asked how events like this help the community, Wiseman said “Letting the public know we’re there for them [and] what our working dogs are able to provide for them.”

“Goodfellow’s a big important part of our community and we certainly appreciate everybody there,” added Hernandez. “It’s a positive thing for the kiddos. They get to see us, the police department, on a regular basis and we want to expose them to our military counterparts as well.”
