GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 17th Training Wing hosted its first Founders Week on Goodfellow, Sept. 15.
Founders Week brings previous commanders and chiefs back to the base to show them the installation’s progress.
“I was the first Air Education and Training Command commander that was sent here,” said retired Col. Charles Powell.
As part of Founders Week, former commanders and chiefs participated in a Q and A panel where current team Goodfellow members could ask questions.
“When I got here the base was on the projected closure list,” said Powell. “The biggest challenge we faced when I was here was getting off that list.”
After the Q and A panel the founders toured the base where they visited the Louis F. Garland Department Of Defense Fire Academy, Crossroads Student Center, Event center and student dorms.
“I was stationed at Goodfellow in the mid-70s so this brought back a lot of memories,” said Matt Healy, San Angelo community leader. “I learned that Col. Norma Brown really had a heart for the Airmen, and that is a tone that goes throughout Goodfellow.”
