Happy Independence Day Published July 2, 2009 By Col. Richard Ayres 17th Training Wing Commander GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- As this Fourth of July weekend approaches, I look forward to celebrating this Independence Day with the proud citizens of San Angelo and the men and women of Team Goodfellow. As we prepare for backyard gatherings and the big fireworks show, let's not forget to take the time to reflect on why we have the honor of celebrating such an important milestone in America's history. The liberty that we enjoy was obtained by the blood of patriots who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to the cause of freedom. As military members and supporters, we bear the torch our forefathers lit to guide us from the darkness of oppression. And it is our military might, the synergy generated by all the branches operating shoulder-to-shoulder in a joint world, which allows us to hold that torch high for the world to see. For more than 230 years, America has been a beacon of hope and a benchmark of freedom for countless people around the globe. Today, we as a nation stand strong, ever defiant in the face of tyranny. So this July 4th, stay safe and have fun; you've earned your independence. But I also ask you to take a moment to remember the sacrifices made by our forefathers to establish the freedom we defend today and also to think about those members of Team Goodfellow deployed around the world, protecting our freedoms. Above all else, feel proud to be playing such a vital role in our nation's freedom and security.
