Airman wins power lifting competition Published April 13, 2010 By Airman 1st Class's Scott Collins, John Goure and De'Angelo Haslam 313th Training Squadron, Center for Information Dominance CORRY STATION, Fla. -- If you hear someone say they are a "power lifter," you don't often think of someone wearing the Air Force uniform. However, Airman 1st Class Julian Navarro, 313th Training Squadron, in not only a power lifter, but a champion as well. For the past five years Airman Navarro has been involved in recreational power lifting. For the past two years, he has actively participated in competitions. When not competing, he lifts at the base gymnasium every day at 5 a.m. One morning, Airman Navarro was working out and was approached by Lt. Cmdr. James Henderson-Coffee, Director of Technological Development, who told him about the USA Power Lifting Association Brother Bennett Power Lifting Competition in Mississippi. Airman Navarro was not able to compete in power lifting competitions since joining the Air Force so the competition incentive gave him a new goal. Excited to get back into competition, he trained every morning for the two months leading up to the competition. His hard work and dedication paid off as he won first place in the 220-pounds division against 10 individuals, with a composite score of 1290 pounds which included a 460 pounds squat, 490 pounds dead lift and 340 pounds bench press. Airman Navarro credits Lt. Cmdr. Henderson-Coffee for introducing him to the competition. "I plan on participating in more competitions in the future," he said. "Power lifting is an awesome stress reliever and a great escape from school and from military life."
