AFRC Discovery Center Has Much to Offer Published Aug. 14, 2009 By Megan Elsner Goodfellow Discovery Resource Center manager GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center Discovery Resource Center offers customer support in different areas for all Goodfellow servicemembers. The resource room is available for personal computer use such as checking email and online banking. All base personnel are invited to utilize the services offered. The center is equipped with career development and job search tools ideal for military members who are separating or retiring. Spouses that are seeking employment are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the services. The center provides a directory of useful internet job sites and local employment agencies and can assist in the job search process. We have a strong working relationship with Tom Green County's Workforce Solutions and are knowledgeable of its resources and of other social services available. The staff also specializes in teaching resume writing skills. A half day resume workshop is jam-packed with information covering all basic components of resume writing, posting, email etiquette and cover letters. All information taught during the workshop is offered on the individual level. We encourage follow up appointments for resume critiquing, to help with a fresh perspective, constructive criticism and useful tips to make your resume shine. Although a great resume is vital, the AFRC staff realizes it is not the only important element in finding a job. A confident individual, who appears well-prepared for an interview will always impress a potential employer. Mock interviews give a person seeking employment the opportunity to sharpen interview skills and prepare answers for potential questions. Interview exercises can help fight "the jitters" during a real job interview. The Discover Career Planning Program is ideal for those individuals separating from the military without a definite plan of action for their transition into the civilian world. It is a service which helps the user explore occupations, majors and schools, build an education plan or develop job-seeking skills. Although it is an on-line service, a login token is necessary for its use. After receiving a token from the AFRC, the user may access this service from any computer with internet connectivity and will be able to log in as many times as desired. Along with all of the other services, the center maintains a lending library which has an extensive collection of titles covering topics such as resume writing, interviews, military transition, occupational exploration, small business development, time management, parenting and divorce. There are also study materials for tests such as the SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT and GRE. Another opportunity at the AFRC for all active duty military and spouses is a free credit report by BrightScore.
