"Fore!" was an often-heard term Sept. 19 when Goodfellow golfers descended on Quicksand Golf Course to participate in this year's Friendship Golf Tournament.

Every year, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Committee, and Goodfellow Air Force Base partner-up to hold the fundraising event.

Goodfellow personnel were teamed up with local San Angelo participants for the tournament, usually two golfers from the base and two from the local community.  The emphasis of the event was the same as always: To continue to strengthen the already-strong relationship between San Angelo and Goodfellow while having a good time.

Colonel Richard Ayres, 17th Training Wing commander, opened the event by speaking to all the participants before the tournament got underway. San Angelo Mayor J.W. Lown also took part in the day's fun-in-the-sun. A total of 128 people participated in the event on 32 teams.

In the end, Team No. 12 (Staff Sgt. James McElroy, Airman 1st Class Chris Nichols, Kevin Settle and Mike DeJacomo) took the first place trophy and ended with the team shooting a 56.

The event raised $13,500 for Project WarmHeart, a charity facilitated by Goodfellow's First Sergeants Council. Project WarmHeart aims to assist family members of those military members deployed from Goodfellow during the holiday season.

As the Agile Joint Center of Excellence, Goodfellow is home to Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines; Project WarmHeart is available to all of them. Historically, the program has provided food baskets for nearly 500 families during the holiday season.
