Navy celebrates 287th birthday

GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas- Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Wendy Phillips, Center for Information Dominance Detachment cryptologist technician, rings the bell at the Navy-wide 9 a.m. bell ringing ceremony celebrating the U.S Navy’s 237th birthday on Oct. 12, here. The tradition of ringing the bell came from the Navy’s use of marking time with the bell; in the ceremony the bell was rung eight times to signify the end of the 237th watch and rung one more time to signify the start of the watch of the 238th year.
