Twelve Air Force cadets were commissioned during a ROTC ceremony at the Angelo State University Houston Harte University Center here, May 10.

This ceremony marks Detachment 847's 40-year anniversary since the first commissioning in May, 1973.

The ceremony started with the posting of the colors and singing of the National Anthem. Afterwards, Col. Carl Jones, Office of the Undersecretary of the Air Force senior military assistant and former ASU cadet, spoke to the cadets as the guest speaker.

"In just a few moments, you'll swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution," said Jones. "Know that the oath is going to change you forever. You'll now be serving something greater than yourself."

After Jones spoke, a current or former military officer swore in each cadet individually, then the cadets' families and friends pinned on their second lieutenant ranks. For the final step of the formal ceremony, the cadets received their first salute from a current or former enlisted member.

Once all the cadets received their commission, Lt. Col. Stephen Magnan, ASU AFROTC Detachment 847 Commander and former ASU cadet, took the stage and announced 2nd Lt. Abraham Morland, former AFROTC Det 847 cadet, as the distinguished graduate. Magnan then gave the closing remarks.

"To the newly commissioned second lieutenants, congratulations," said Magnan. "You earned this commission, you made this happen and you are responsible to take this to the next level. You are now part of the rich heritage of the Air Force and others will look to you to epitomize the Air Force Core Values."

The ceremony closed with a reception, allowing those in attendance a chance to congratulate the new second lieutenants.
