Lt. John Goodfellow
On Sept. 14, 1918, 1st. Lt. John J. Goodfellow Jr. piloted one of six reconnaissance sorties carried out by the 24th Aero Squadron in western France. Goodfellow and his observer 1st Lt. Elliott M. Durant Jr., flying a Salmson 2A2, were shot down and reported missing. Later on Sept. 17, 1918, they were officially reported killed in action. In 1941, Goodfellow Field, later Goodfellow Air Force Base was named in his honor. (U.S. Air Force graphic by James Orlando)
